BAPHL 25

The senior members of the Baystate Alternatively-Powered Human Legion are proud to announce that a one-day, in-person tryout will be held on Saturday, October 11th, 2025! Here are the details:

TIME: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM
PLACE: Kickoff begins promptly at 10:00 AM in the Fenway Victory Gardens. You'll be traveling roughly two miles around that area!
TEAM SIZE: To keep our power levels balanced, please create a team of 2-6 applicants.
COST: $40 will cover your application fee.
DRESS CODE: Superhero-themed outfits, ranging from graphic tees to full costumes. Dressing up is not necessary but highly encouraged!
GEAR: You'll want to bring water, protective coverage in case of rain, and lots of solving equipment: pencils, straight edges, markers, scissors, tape, and anything else you need to solve.

Basic Information

What is BAPHL?

BAPHL is the Boston Area Puzzle Hunt League, a recurring series of puzzle hunts in the Boston area.

Teams of 4–6 are given challenging puzzles that require various logical, lateral-thinking, and creative skills to solve. There is also an element of exploration which requires teams to visit certain locations during the completion of the event.

Where will BAPHL 25 take place?

You should anticipate spending all day at the hunt. You'll be visiting five locations total: the kickoff area in the Victory Gardens will also be where the end of the hunt occurs, and you'll go to four other public spots along the way. There will be several restaurants near various locations for lunching; two of our locations are also in large grassy areas, so if you prefer you can pack picnic supplies instead. You'll also want water and snacks—dehydration and hunger are every superhero's worst enemy!

What about solvers who don't have teams?

If you are an unattached hero or pair of heroes looking for a team, please fill out the Registration Form and indicate that you are interested in joining another group.

If your team is willing to accept unattached heroes (up to two), please fill out the Registration Form and mark that you have openings on your squad!

What if it rains?

We have 10/12 as a rain date, but don't plan to use it unless the rain is truly torrential. We encourage you to bring whatever you might need to continue puzzling in light to moderate amounts of rain.

Puzzle Info

Members of the Baystate Alternatively-Powered Human Legion are bound by their love of social justice and puzzles! Read on to learn a little more about what to expect during your tryout.

Puzzle Types:

Expect a wide range of puzzles, ranging from crosswords (and even a cryptic!) to trivia to Nikoli-style logic problems to pop culture quizzes. We hope that our hunt will contain something for everyone! For samples, you can review puzzles that featured in BAPHL 23, BAPHL 22, or BAPHL 21.

Difficulty Level:

We will have two divisions in this BAPHL: Justice League (Hard Mode) and Teen Titans (Normal Mode).

If you're new to puzzlehunts, want a less competitive solving experience, and enjoy things like the Deadbolt Mystery Society or Puzzled Pint, we recommend Teen Titans mode. This level will provide unlimited hints and clues along the way!

If you have a few BAPHL battles under your belt—or have tangled with Tim at the MIT Mystery Hunt—then you'll want to join the Justice League. This mode will contain trickier challenges and vaguer clues (though we still want to make sure that everyone has fun regardless of solving level!).

Puzzle Totals:

Your tryout for BAPHL will consist of four rounds containing five puzzles each—four regular, or "feeder", puzzles, plus a final metapuzzle that requires solving the first four—and one "Endgame" round that will consist of two Mega-Metas that incorporate multiple puzzles simultaneously. This makes for a grand total of 22 puzzles.
